JOHN SYKES

English Composer, born India in 1909, died Bath 1962.

John Austin Sykes was a music scholar at Clifton College (Bristol) under Douglas Fox, and gained his FRCO while still a schoolboy. In 1928 he went to Oxford as the Balliol College organ scholar. In 1932 he became a composition pupil of Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music. In 1936 he was appointed to the staff of Kingswood School, Bath and remained there for the rest of his life. Most of his music was written either for the school or for a small group of friends.

The John Sykes Project

It is intended to produce as much of John Sykes' music in printed format as possible. As pieces become available, they will be added to this site. Comments and suggestions about the site and John Sykes' music are welcome and should be sent to sykesproj at talktalk dot net (please replace 'at' with @ and 'dot' with a dot and delete all the spaces - anti-spam measure).

The manuscripts from which this music is printed are kept in the John Sykes Archive, a part of the School Archives, Kingswood School, Bath, BA1 5RG

The project members hope that making this music available in this way will encourage the performance - both private and public - of this glorious music. Although the music is still in copyright, the owner of the rights is happy for the music to be downloaded, printed and performed without permission, provided it is not for commercial purposes. If it is for commercial purposes (publishing, recording, or performance where there is an entry fee), then permission will be required: please contact: The Bursar, Kingswood School, Lansdown, Bath, BA1 5RG.
